Our 2018 Honorees
The Orange County Land Trust is proud to honor conservationists and journalists Janet Crawshaw and Jerry Novesky, publishers of The Valley Table Magazine, for their leadership in our local farm to table movement, and for inspiring a new generation of farmers, restauranteurs and local “foodies”, which continues to nourish and sustain Orange County’s agricultural heritage and economy.
In 1996, Janet and Jerry took an eight-month sabbatical, traveling 35,000 miles across the country seeking authentic American experiences. They found that local farms, bakeries, fish markets, wineries and breweries were the key to understanding the country’s distinct regions. Inspired by their trip, they returned to their home in the Hudson Valley intent on awakening the region’s food consciousness. They published their first issue of The Valley Table Magazine 20 years ago, in 1998.
Today, the magazine is known as the source for all things food in the Hudson Valley. Each issue of The Valley Table celebrates the region’s food traditions, innovations and agricultural heritage, strengthening the links among the valley’s producers, purveyors and consumers, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices. The magazine has been recognized by The Daily Meal as one of the 20 Great Food Magazines You Should Know About. In 2006, working with a distinguished group of chefs, restaurateurs and tourism leaders, the couple launched Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW). The two-week culinary event is among the largest Restaurant Week events in the country, with over 200 participating restaurants.
Cedar Lakes Estate
A Timeless, Private Estate for Modern Events and Escapes
Co-owners Stephanie and Lisa Karvellas are the two young, entrepreneurial sisters behind Cedar Lakes Estate, a magnificent 500-acre property in southwestern Orange County with breathtaking views, tree-lined lakes, rolling green hills and stunning mountains.
Formerly a summer camp for inner city youth, the property was purchased by the Karvellas family in 1990 as a country retreat. In 2010, Stephanie and Lisa decided to return to this memorable childhood home after establishing successful careers as an event planner and chef, respectively. Together, they turned Cedar Lakes Estate into a rustic, elegant events facility and destination inn, known for high-end celebrations, celebrity weddings, and big name corporate retreats.
Ten cottages are beautifully appointed with fine, luxury amenities and guests have access to the property’s red-water lakes, cedar wood forests, hiking and biking trails, tennis and basketball courts, as well as fishing and boating opportunities. Delicious, unique menus are thoughtfully and passionately created using locally sourced foods, with many seasonal herbs and vegetables picked fresh from the onsite garden.
