Orange County Land Trust Mission:
To preserve the fields, forests, wetlands, ridgelines and river corridors in and around Orange County through voluntary land conservation.
Summary of Position:
The Development Director
- oversees all fund raising for annual operations and special programs
- works with the Board to ensure the long-term financial security of the Land Trust
- directs all public outreach activities.
The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and works closely with appropriate board and advisory bodies and any fundraising consultants that may be retained.
Duties:
- Plan, design, implement and evaluate all fundraising activities with committee support
- Facilitate preparation of long-term financial planning to support the organizations strategic plan
- Research, identify and cultivate donor prospects, including individuals, foundations and corporations; coordinate gift solicitations by Executive Director, Board members, staff and volunteers
- Prepare for and solicit gifts at all levels
- Prepare grant applications for operational support and coordinate program grant writing with staff
- Work with Board and staff to initiate and coordinate Capital Campaigns
- Coordinate with Executive Director to develop reports for Board and annual meetings
- Ensure there is cross-training with other staff on donor database
- Create fundraising teams as needed, drawing from Board and volunteers.
- Direct public outreach activities, including public relations, promotions and special events (major donor functions, annual meeting, member events and tours)
- Represent Orange County Land Trust at appropriate functions
- Coordinate preparation of promotional materials (annual report, newsletters, major donor items and brochures)
- Maintain involvement with external organizations and professional groups that may provide continuing education or build long-term relationships with potential donors/supporters
- Supervise the fundraising database
- Participate in Directors meetings
- Work with Executive Director and appropriate committees on preparation of operating budget
- Make recommendations to the Executive Director for potential Board or advisory council members
- Carry out other duties that may be assigned by the Executive Director
Qualifications:
- A genuine interest and enthusiasm for private voluntary land conservation.
- Outgoing and friendly personality with the ability to meet new people easily and quickly learn confidence.
- Appreciation of diverse land issues and landowner views.
- Background in fundraising, planning, marketing and public outreach. Experience with non-profits or land trusts preferred.
- A self-starter with the ability to initiate and follow through on new programs or projects and meet new people in order to achieve Land Trust goals.
- Ability to work with and through committees to develop and implement fundraising programs.
- Good communication and organizing skills.
- Ability to work with diverse partners to develop successful fundraising projects.
- Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds
- Willingness to enlist and work with volunteers.
