Orange County Land Trust Looking for Volunteers to Place and Monitor Flood Gages in Black Dirt Region
Middletown, NY —
August 8, 2008
The Orange County Land Trust is looking for volunteers to help place and monitor U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Staff Gages on the Wallkill River and its tributaries to track the movement of water in the Black Dirt Region in an effort to identify areas in need of flood mitigation work.
This fall, the Wallkill River Task Force, a project of the Orange County Land Trust, will install USGS Staff Gages at two locations on each of the Wallkill's three largest tributaries in the Black Dirt Region- the Pochuck, Quaker and Rutgers creeks. Staff gages will also be installed at three locations on the Wallkill River itself, one in New Jersey and two in New York, where benchmarks have already been established. In addition, rain gauges will be monitored in each of the tributary watersheds to get an accurate representation of how rainfall contributes to water level in the tributaries.
Whenever the Wallkill River floods the Black Dirt Region, questions arise concerning how water has moved through the tributaries and into the main stem of the river. The Wallkill River Task Force is working to determine which tributary contributes more water to the Wallkill River. Monitoring water height, also known as stage, at strategic locations will help track the movement of water during times of high flow.
