The Orange County Land Trust presented Dr. Bill Schuster, past Executive Director of Black Rock Forest, at its Celebration for Conservation at the Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery on Thursday, August 10, 2023. Dr. Schuster received the award for his countless contributions and dedication to scientific research, environmental education, and conservation in Black Rock Forest and beyond.
The award is named after the late Louis V. Mills, founder and first board president of the Orange County Land Trust.
About: Dr. Bill Schuster is Senior Ecologist at Black Rock Forest where he previously served as Executive Director for over 30 years. He is also an Adjunct Senior Research Scientist at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a member of Hudson Highlands Land Trust and Wallkill Valley Land Trust’s boards of directors, serves on Storm King Art Center’s Landscape Committee, and is a member of Scenic Hudson’s Climate and Stewardship Committee. Much of Bill’s recent work has focused on ecological connectivity and reconnecting wildlife populations that have been separated by major roadways. He is part of a team proposing construction of a major wildlife crossing in Orange County.
